When I was planning to move to Canada, one of the factors I considered was when I was going to be physically present in the country. Because the cold and I are not friends at all, coming to this country in April really seemed like the best option. I mean.. I’m that person in the office who would either look for a way to turn off the central air conditioning? or redirect the vent upwards. It’s that kind of girl you now want to throw into Canada’s -20 degrees Celsius weather??!! Oghwefia (means God forbid in Urhobo). I am so glad I made the best decision for myself and came in Spring. Since I’ve arrived, a lot of people have been telling me how lucky I was that I didn’t come the week before because there was an ice storm then and the streets were packed full with snow that immediately turned to ice.
Well, my middle name is ‘Lucky’ so yaaaaar. It is now a pleasant 17 degrees Celsius weather for them Canadians today though yours truly is still wearing two outfits and socks inside the house to keep warm.
Another interesting thing is that the sun doesn’t go down until like 9 pm and comes up the next day as early as 5.30am. If you are not keeping track of time, you can actually think it’s still early whereas it isn’t. I hear that once Summer comes proper, there’ll be people milling around in various states of undress.
Today Monday was a relatively quiet day. I actually love when Mondays are quiet and easy going. It is therapy for all those crazy work Mondays I had to pass through when I was actively working. I was supposed to take the train Downtown but the plans didn’t really align. I’m also thankful I didn’t make the trip because there was some crazy guy in North York, close to downtown Toronto who rammed his van into a sidewalk killing 9 people and injuring 16. Truly sad incident to be honest. I was asking my hosts if this was a regular occurrence here and their answer was No. Right now the local TV stations are running the story on a loop and statements have been issued by the Mayor of Toronto, the Toronto Police Chief and the Minister of Public Safety… Talk about a country that works… Hoping this is an isolated situation and there are no repeat incidents.
Tomorrow hopefully I’ll be sorting out some of my paperwork here.
