Yesterday, I went to a basketball game. Apparently, it’s NBA playoffs season and there’s a team from Toronto in the playoffs. But that wasn’t the game I went to see.
This game was by the Harlem Globetrotters who are some kind of professional team who infuse their games with a lot of role play, tricks and humour. This game was held at the Hersey’s Centre in Mississauga, a town close to Toronto. To get to the centre, we had to drive some two hours from the suburbs of Stouffville. Long drive but well worth it in the end.
There were so many kids and adults all decked out in Harlem Globetrotters kitted outfits. So many groupies. Lots of people shelling out 30 Canadian dollars for a basketball that could then get autographed.
As a Naija girl who up until now hasn’t really cared much for basketball, I just sat put in my chair, taking in all the excitement.
The stadium was actually half full, and though it was chilly outside, it was comfortably warm on the inside. Thank God for free WiFi because I was just flexing the internet connection and updating the BlackMigrantGirl IG and Twitter pages.
Also at the game, we sang the Canadian national anthem. Me, I just jejely googled the words for safe keeping on my phone so I can be practising for the Citizenship exam, which is only 3 years away… Lol.. ??. Well, I read somewhere that it is never too early to start and time does go by quickly when you are having fun, so best to begin early. Another highlight was getting to the snack till, and finding out my Nigerian debit card worked…yay! Only for me to get back to my seat and discover the popcorn I bought was the salted one ??. It appears that is a thing here- more salted popcorn sold in public than sugary- or so I’m told by a friend who took me to the game.
Did I also mention trying out Japanese food? Altogether, their meal was either too sweet or too watery. All them noodles in soup, or noodles in sweet gravy. Abeg, give me Chinese food with hot peppers any day, any time. Hopefully, I’ll make it to the grocery store today to purchase some healthy fruits and nuts and stay on my fit fam, healthy course.
Here’s to more exciting and educating Saturdays here ??
